One-night Melody attends a hypnotist show and slowly fragments of memories start returning to her. The author carries the reader off into the world of Melody Browne, a young single mother who has no memory of her early childhood. It’s strange, but this book does not feature on Lisa Jewell’s website – I am not sure why. Not my genre of choice, but I enjoyed the other Lisa Jewell books I have read (Then She Was Gone, I Found You, The Making of Us and Watching You) so coming across this oldy was a no brainer. Not too many books have reduced me to tears, but by the time I reached the last page of this story I had tears rolling down my cheeks and my sleepy husband gave me a “ what the…?” look when I finally closed the books.

I went to school with a Melody Brown, and naturally, I could not resist picking up this book. The Truth About Melody Browne popped up on the bookshelf of a second-hand bookstore I visited. But the more answers she uncovers, the more questions she is left with, and Melody can’t help but wonder if she’ll ever know the whole truth about her past. Her journey takes her up and down the countryside, to seaside towns to the back streets of London, where she meets strangers who seem to love her like their own. Slowly, she begins the arduous process of piecing together the real story of her childhood. When she comes around, she is suddenly overwhelmed with fragmented memories of her life before that fateful fire. She hasn’t seen her parents since she left home at fifteen, but Melody has no desire to reconnect until one night while attending a hypnotist show with a date, she faints. Now in her early thirties, Melody is a single mother, living in the middle of London with her teenaged son. Ever since this tragic event, Melody Browne has had no recollection of her life before she was rescued from the flames. When she was a child, Melody Browne’s house burned down, destroying all her family’s possessions and her memories.
